I’m taking a studio class over the summer and was assigned Volvo brand pliers as my first project. They’re supposed to show the company’s history, be some thing Volvo drives would use, and pick up on Volvo’s design language.

I’m thinking I’ll lean toward’s the XC side of Volvo. More to work with, you know, rugged and outdoorsy, like tools.

Any Volvo owners or fans with any ideas? I was thinking I could have the little Volvo logo at the joint of the pliers.

And have the handle be a nice porous wood that forms with some nice swooping metal. I’d also like to make them a safe pair of pliers, fitting in with Volvo’s reputation for safety.

I was thinking make them slip-joints with the slip as the “diagonal” of the classic volvo grill - which is taking your logo-on-pivot idea one step further.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooo

It could be hard to pull off without looking like I just tacked the logo on there. But thanks for the idea.

Thanks!

Seems like a forgoten design that might translate well into Volvo language.

There’s a place in Liberty, Maine called the Liberty Tool Company. They’re a great source for antique and unusual tools. I’ve purchased tools ranging from a working 70's HP laser interferometer to a complete set of B&S pin gauges to a bunch of antique hand tools for my kids to play with. It’s a cool place to stop if you’re able- though if you’re not, they also sell via ebay. Sorry; I’ve no idea how to embed a link: Libertytoolco.com

ed: any chance I could get un-greyed?

To me, Volvo’s design language is really best represented by the clean and plain look of the waterfall center console from a few years ago.

Thiking something like this, but without the bumps or the holes and with cleaner angles:

Edit: And for an added touch look at the special stitching in their Ocean Race trim line. The 2006? XC90 Ocean Race edition had light colored leather with blue stiching for example.
